Currency and Tipping in The Seychelles
-
Money matters
Helpful info about Seychelles currency and tipping policies
The Seychelles have their own currency, called Seychelle Rupees (SCR), however, US dollars are also accepted in some places. Euros are appreciated more and are widely accepted on all the islands. If you are able to exchange or withdraw local currency, it will come in handy at smaller establishments.
Most hotels, shops and restaurants accept MasterCard, Access and Visa credit cards; American Express and Diners Club are accepted to a lesser extent. Signs are displayed advising what credit cards are accepted.
ATM facilities are available at the major banks on Mahé, Praslin and La Digue; as well as at the airports in Mahé and Praslin. These provide cash in SCR, the local currency.
Most services (hotels, restaurants, taxis etc) already include a 5 to 10% service charge and so an additional tip is not compulsory in the Seychelles. A nominal tip (at your discretion) for exceptional service will be gratefully received.
Safety in the Seychelles
-
One of the safest places on Earth
A sanctuary for fun and relaxation
Known as a haven for fun and relaxation, the Seychelles is also a sanctuary in terms of safety and has very low crime levels.
As with anywhere in the world, we suggest you take the normal precautions, and take care not to carry large sums of money on your person or leave your valuables unattended.
Weather wise, as only the most remote southern islands are within the cyclone belt, there is no particular season or adverse weather conditions that you need to worry about.
There is also no risk of contracting diseases such as malaria or yellow fever, and therefore no vaccinations are required prior to travelling to the Seychelles. Although mosquitos are prevalent at certain times of the year, these are easily warded off with insect repellant!

A treasure chest of culture and design
From fashion to furniture, you won't leave the Seychelles empty handed
You can expect to find interesting markets and laid-back shops in the Seychelles. Artwork and gems, perfumes and teas as well as local handicrafts are just some of the treasures you can choose from!
The best place to go in terms of shopping is Victoria, the capital of main-island Mahé. However, you will also find small retail outlets on Praslin and La Digue, and most large hotels have a small selection of souvenirs available.
Opening hours vary, however you will find most shops open for business from 8am to 5pm from Monday to Friday. Shops are also usually open on Saturday from 8am to 12noon, but are closed on Sundays.
There are also numerous stalls and grocery stores that are open every day until late evening.

Getting around in the Seychelles
Getting around the islands can be as simple as making sure you have a pair of comfortable walking shoes! Bicycles are available, whether provided by your hotel or hired from one of the local rental stores and are a great way to explore smaller islands such as La Digue.
Rental cars are easily accessible and most require an international driving license. If you are not comfortable driving on the left side of the road, then private cars and taxis can also be arranged. Or else, why not join the locals and take the scheduled buses? This will be easier on the pocket but may be more time consuming.
You also have various options for hopping between islands. The most common two are via small plane or by ferry. Air Seychelles runs daily flights between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue, and the IDC (Island Development Company) operate flights to some of the outer islands (these will booked via your hotel). Some islands can also be reached by yachts or helicopter. These services are governed by regulations that vary from island to island.
