Fishing in the Seychelles

If you are a fishing enthusiast, you have most likely already heard of the variety of fish attracted to this archipelago’s warm water, as well as the record-sized catches which these islands are renowned for such as Sailfish, Dorado, Wahoo, Kingfish as well as varieties of tuna and marlin.

The Seychelles is an exciting fishing destination for the expert and novice alike, with many international sport and recreational fishermen enthusiastically returning year after year to these rich fishing grounds. The best news of all? One usually doesn’t have to venture too far from luxury to enjoy this exciting sport! There are many excursions available from the inner islands which can take you as far North as Bird Island or Denis Island, where the ocean floor plummets to 2,000 metres.

Fishing around Desroches Island

If you want a true once-in-a-lifetime experience though, head over to the less-frequently visited Outer Islands which, close to the continental shelf drop-offs, are a mecca for large game-fish and boasts opportunities to reel in Bonefish, Dogtooth Tuna, Moustache Grouper and Bigeye Trevally.

As these islands are more remote and secluded, it has resulted in the waters around the Outer Islands teeming with heaps of different fish species, allowing for various different styles of fishing such as popping, spinning, jigging or trolling.

The only luxury accommodation in the Outer Islands, Desroches Island is the obvious choice for the discerning fisherman who likes to return to pampering after a day’s hard battle with the giants of the Seychelles.

Desroches Island has its own fishing centre, Cast-a-Way, with expert staff on hand to provide great advice on the intricacies of luring the great ones.

With a selection of different boats available to charter, including two sportfishers, all of the major fishing grounds in the area are relatively close whilst other outer islands are easily accessible.

Trolling

Here are some of the different fishing techniques which are practised in the Seychelles:

Trolling: This is the most common style of blue water fishing enjoyed by specialist and recreational anglers. Anyone – young or old, men and women – can enjoy the adrenalin rush of trolling for big game fish. The method of troll fishing is to lay out a “spread” of lines, which consists of as many rods as your boat can take and your crew can handle. These lines have lures attached to them and are pulled by the boat at a slow and consistent speed until the fish strike.

Jigging

Jigging: There are numerous names and sub sets of jig fishing. Speed jigging, Japanese jigging, deep jigging, butterfly jigging, extreme jigging and vertical jigging are some of the many different names given to fishing with long jigs. This all boils down to fishing with jigs ranging from 100 to 600 gram and working the jigs from the sea floor up through all the water columns. It has seen a phenomenal rise in popularity within Asia, Oceania, Europe and now the US and Africa, but its recent popularity hides the fact that jig fishing is one of the world’s oldest fishing techniques using artificial lures. Fish will attack jigs when they are feeding or the jigger will simply get an impulse strike if the jig presentation is right. Jig presentation is improved by working the jig with the rod and the reel.

Popping& Plugging

Popping & Plugging: Popping is carried out either from the shore or offshore. A medium heavy rod of 7’ with a reliable strong “coffee grinder” type reel is used to cast the surface lure. The recommended method of retrieval for best results is to point the rod tip at the lure, retrieve any slack line and firmly sweep the rod tip in a downward motion at approximately 45 degrees. Allow the lure to rest for several seconds and if a fish has not taken the lure repeat as necessary. Popping is a very active way of fishing, and catching some of the toughest fish, like Giant Trevally and Dogtooth Tuna, will make every moment a memorable one.

Drop-Shot

Drop-shot: Drop-shot is an awesome light tackle technique practiced by young and old. This is a favourite amongst the ladies and junior anglers, and is a very successful way of targeting king fish, jobfish and smaller reef-dwelling fish. The technique is practiced by using a weighted hook (jig head) which is fitted with a realistic plastic fish (fluke). The rigged drop-shot is dropped to the bottom and retrieved; in this way enticing the fish to a strike. The technique has proven very rewarding and has yielded some mind-blowing fish catches.

Whilst the seas can become rough between May and September, blue water fishing can be enjoyed year-round, depending on the strength of your sea legs.
